OUR POWDER COATING FACILITIES

The Plant

SP Leicester have invested heavily in their new state of the art Powder Coating Plant. SP have long recognized that the high quality finish our customers demand cannot be achieved without investment in modern plant and machinery.

Our new modern dry powder all in one plant is a continuous moving paint line that covers an area 18mtr x 18mtr.

The track and plant is designed to achieve maximum throughput and yet maintain a high quality finish and consistency.

Parts to be painted go through several stages as they progress around the track. The first process is the degreasing washer cubicle. This washer uses environmentally safe chemicals under high pressure jets which  thoroughly hot washes and safely remove all grease, oil and manufacturing swarf. The process is finished by a complete phosphate spray finish minimizing future metal corrosion and providing an ideal surface key for the powder coat. All chemicals not used are filtered and recycled within the plant for cost efficiency and environmental considerations.

From the degreaser the track moves the parts to the hot air drier. High powered hot air blowers thoroughly dry parts ready for powder coating.

The powder coating is the only manual part of the process. This is intentional so we can ensure the parts to be painted are fully coated by our highly trained spray technicians. We feel that automation at this stage cannot compete with the judgment and dexterity that our technicians can apply.

The oven is the final stage of the painting process. From the spray booth the track moves the parts into a large forced fan air recirculation type double pass curing tunnel oven. The products are then heated to around 200 degrees centigrade where the powder fuses (or melts) onto the product forming a smooth tough and thick coating.

Before a Paint finish can be successfully applied, the surface of the item to be painted should be clean and meticulously free from any type of oil or grease contamination. To remove this contamination from the product it is usual for metal products to be 'Pre-Treated' prior to either a Paint or a Powder coating being applied. Our Aqueous Combined Degrease/Phosphate Plant is ideally suited to 'Pre Treating' metal products, with the degrease chemicals removing any oils and the phosphate chemical reaction providing the ideal surface key.

Following Aqueous Pre treatment, products  pass through a forced hot air recirculation dry off Oven. This system requires a minimum amount of operator input and so it is ideally suited to continuous track conveyoring

With Powder Coating, only the Paint solids are sprayed onto the product, in an atomized powder form.
The Powder is drawn to the product and adheres to the product due to an electrostatic charge applied to the Powder during spraying. The Product, thus covered with the Powder Paint is then heated (to around 200 degrees Centigrade) in an Oven, wherein the powder fuses (melts) on to the product and thus forms a smooth, tough and resilient coating.

High Quality, Because the powder is fused onto the product, it has excellent scratch resistance properties. It also has a pleasing 'smooth' appearance and forms a sealed skin around the product thus minimising corrosion risk.

A good distribution of heat is vital for successful process oven design. Indeed, Our oven is specified in the most critical aerospace applications requiring superb temperature profile stability. To ensure good performance. The oven incorporates  medium pressure multi-vane centrifugal fans complete with scroll casing to provide a positive and well controlled air movement.  Large ductwork ensures that the high air volume will not disturb the product.

We have fast moving track system for quick loading and removal of parts. The continuous moving track enables us to paint many small and medium sized items quickly
